Acclaimed former Welsh National Opera singer Alwyn Mellor is giving a rare performance in Wales in aid of a local charity, close to her heart.
The show, Something Wonderful!, will include well known songs from film and stage by George Gershwin, Cole Porter, and other greats, with soprano Alwyn accompanied by Michael Pollock on piano.
It takes place in the Rhiwbina area of Cardiff on Saturday 18 March with tickets at £10.
“I’m looking forward to singing music I really love, and that I don’t always have an opportunity to perform these days,” said Alwyn, who rose to fame at Welsh National Opera (WNO).
“Michael and I met at WNO when I first joined the company, just over 30 years ago. It will be a lovely opportunity for us to perform together and share thismusic with our audience.”
Proceeds from the show will go to Good Neighbours in North Cardiff (GNINC), a voluntary group which helps local people remain independent while living in their own homes. The charity offers help with transport, shopping, and companionship.
Alwyn has been a volunteer with the charity since December 2018. “I began by helping out, taking clients to appointments and doing their shopping,” she explained.
“Once the pandemic arrived, and I couldn’t work, I shopped for several clients every week as there was a great need for our services. During that time, we could really only offer shopping , but I know it meant a lot to many people during such difficult times. Just having a chat from a distance was a lifeline for lots of people.
“I also helped to set up a telephone companionship scheme for GNINC so clients had a volunteer to talk to on a regular basis. This scheme has continued post pandemic”.
