Theatre encourages budding writers

Kudos to Cardiff’s Sherman Theatre, which has announced a free, weekly writing programme, offering expert advice and training for budding playwrights.

Hone Your Craft will cover character creation, re-drafting and structure, how commissioning works, and alternative ways to get work made.

Taught by the Sherman’s in-house literary department, which is funded by the Arts Council of Wales and Bad Wolf, and delivered across eight evening sessions, online and in person, between September and November 2025, it’s aimed at Welsh or Wales-based writers who want to be or consider themselves to be playwrights.

Writers are asked to apply for their place on the Sherman Theatre’s website at www.shermantheatre.co.uk/theatre-makers/ by Friday 12 September 2025.

Announcing the programme, Sherman Theatre’s literary manager Davina Moss said: “Learning is a lifelong part of being a writer, so we’re thrilled to be offering the playwrights of Wales this unique opportunity; all the more so because it’s in-house, open access, and free”.

Sherman’s support for writers doesn’t end there. Unusually, the theatre also welcomes unsolicited scripts through the Send Us Your Script service.

And Sherman’s Pit Stop sessions offer writers the chance to meet the literary department for support or advice, or even just a general chat.

Here’s my review of Sherman Theatre’s 2024 highlights – uplifting, meaningful, and relevant.
